The 2011 riots in London began with the police fatally shooting drug dealer Mark Duggan, and ended with the solemn dignity of grieving father Tariq Jahan.

Jahan’s 21-year-old son Haroon had been killed trying to protect local businesses from looters in Birmingham during that horrible week, and the father’s eloquence and restraint were widely praised.

‘I lost my son. Blacks, Asians, whites, we all live in the same community,’ he said: ‘Why do we have to kill one another? What started these riots and what’s escalated? Why are we doing this?’
