The growing ideological baby gap
Conservatives and liberals used to have an equal number of children – not any more
I took the children to watch the second Dr Strange film over the weekend, just to give us two hours when no one was shouting at each other or arguing or ignoring my appeals to clear up.
Obviously, while I agree that reading any deeper meaning in low-brow culture is inherently a bad thing, I was struck by the underlining subversive message. The story revolves around the Scarlet Witch, a 30-something woman who is driven insane by dreams of the children she never had, and must obtain the power to travel across multiverses in order to become the mother she didn’t in this world.
This power — it had some name, which I forget — is controlled by a young Hispanic woman, who the Witch must capture in order to achieve her desire, even though it will kill the girl and probably destroy everything around her. As if the analogy isn’t already there in plain sight, hidden among the overt progressive window-dressing mandatory in all Marvel films, the girl is called ‘America’.
