Few phenomena will expose the unwillingness of Britain's petit liberal bourgeoisie to even understand - let alone accept - the potential unifying quality of tradition marked on this scale, as today's coronation.

While feeling personally ambivalent about the characters involved (I won't be watching) I will feel strongly inclined to resist the misery of those who sneer at this event. Because I finally took the trouble to understand it, having moved on from a lifetime of indulging my original student politics. I hope Chaz does the best job he can.

I too had mixed feelings (perhaps we are of an age) but, your logic being correct, the moment for forgiving, and thereby unifying, arrived yesterday. There was a moment, immediately following the anointing, when the King knelt before God, divested of his regalia. Flawed and sinning, just like the rest of us, and seeking God's forgiveness. The phrase 'Ecce Homo' came to mind.

One does not have to sign up to the metaphysics to have faith in the unifying symbolism of that moment; entirely missed by the blabbing classes, of course.

Being, as they are, more about engineering the world they want than understanding the world they're in.

I don't mind, per se, anyone who seeks to change things to suit their idea of moral or material progress. My objection stems from their lack of curiosity about the things they would sweep aside.

"Perhaps the most impressive role is that of a champion, a tradition dating back to William the Conqueror. When his wife Matilda of Flanders was crowned as Queen of England, attendees were met by the sight of a ‘great hulk of a man’, Robert Marmion, arriving in the cathedral. This terrifying, heavily armed giant rode his horse into the middle of the hall and shouted ‘if any person denies that our most gracious sovereign, lord William, and his spouse Matilda, are not king and queen of England, he is a false-hearted traitor and a liar; and here I, as champion, do challenge him to single combat’."

I was hoping that some modern Robert Marmion might offer a similar challenge to the various hashtag-notmyking types, yesterday.

It was at his coronation that Charlemagne said "Let my armies be the rocks and the trees and the birds in the sky..."

"A coronation is a mystical bond between God, the king, and his people, an inviolable pact that blesses the ruler with divine approval."

The silly notion of the Divine Right of Kings, which I suspect is Roman rather than Biblical in origin, is not, one shared by ancient Chinese tradition. The much misunderstood Mandate of Heaven, requires rulers to be 'accepted by the people' (Mencius-5A:5.10). Oddly, the present Son of Heaven does not refer to this passage in his various pronouncements on government.

Well it wasn't quite the divine right of kings, that was a bit later. or at least, it began in the 14th century with Giles of Rome although only became popular in the 16th century. I imagine that the divine right of kings become more popular simply because gunpowder increased the strength of the king relative to his barons (who couldn't control castles anymore).

before then kings had limits to their power, simply because that was the reality of the system. But killing them was still considered a horrific crime.
