I can't help but be impressed by the diversity of the candidates jockeying to be the next PM. It's not just the ability to rub the noses of Labour, whose high bench is far whiter (as Suzanne Moore grudgingly admitted) but it rejects the progressives' attitude that so many of the classic liberal beliefs are only institutionally racist and oppressive and that progressives are automatically owed the fealty of non-whites (one of the strangest attitudes, especially given how distinctly non-progressive most of the non-white world is). To show that these common beliefs we once took for granted can and do transcend race and culture is becoming more and more important to their survival for the future, especially as (at least in the United States) so many of the descendants of the creators of and bearers of liberal democracy are becoming strongly woke.
A big recent trend in the US is the large movement of Hispanic voters, the biggest minority group, towards the Republican party and how it's causing panic among the Democrats. The reasons the newly Republican Hispanics give is that they strongly embrace the concept of the United States as a hardworking, free market capitalism, liberal (classical) society, a land of opportunity, law and order, and where everyone is equal under the law - which brought them and their parents to the US, while at the same time the descendants of the people who founded the US have marched increasingly leftward and openly disclaim their heritage as institutionally racist and oppressive and supportive of distinctly unequal DEI programs. While institutions like Harvard are fully in the throes of wokery and where most faculty and students would describe the US Constitution as racist, predominately Hispanic, predominately working class districts in Texas and elsewhere are proudly flying the American flag and openly talking of the American dream.
The American story is different from the British story. But it is still a good feeling to make the New York Times unhappy that the world refuses to comply with its preconceived notions for how things should be.

The classic example from my lifetime is the expulsion of the Asian merchant class from Uganda in the 70s. Many just came here, and did it all over again. I lived in Easton, Central Bristol, for many years - there was (still is) an Indian shop there, Eastern Food Market, which has gone from strength to strength - the family were booted out with nothing. Have bought up many other shops, opening sub units. For a while they had the most glorious take away, food cooked on the spot by all the grannies. When we visited friends elsewhere, we were always implored to come with as much of their food as we could,
