The decline in faith was the major factor in my opinion. Less faith, meant more corruption, less children, lack of hope in the future, ipso facto, lack of stake in the fate of the country.
Just like the UK today.
It will take a Catholic revival to resurrect both countries from regional powers back to world powers.
